Garmin has officially introduced the Fenix 9 Pro, its latest premium outdoor smartwatch, alongside the standard Fenix 9. The new Pro model focuses on durability, longer battery life, brighter display technology, improved storage, and additional connectivity options. One of its biggest highlights is the return of a highly power-efficient MiP display with integrated solar charging on the larger models. Garmin says the solar-equipped version can deliver up to 291 days of battery life in power-saving mode, making it one of the company’s most endurance-focused smartwatches yet.

Garmin Fenix 9 Pro gets a premium titanium design

The Fenix 9 Pro is positioned above the regular Fenix 9 and comes with a more premium construction. Unlike the standard model, the Pro features a case made entirely from titanium rather than combining titanium with fiber-reinforced polymer. Garmin has also made the new case slightly thinner than its predecessor while maintaining the rugged design expected from the Fenix family.

The watch is available in three case sizes: 43mm, 47mm and 51mm. The 43mm and 47mm versions use 1.3-inch and 1.4-inch displays, respectively. The larger 51mm model gets a slightly bigger 1.5-inch screen, giving users more space for maps, workout information and other data.

Durability remains a major part of the Fenix formula. The Fenix 9 Pro is rated for 10 ATM water resistance and can be used for diving down to a depth of 40 meters. That makes it suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, swimming, training and other demanding environments.

AMOLED and solar MiP display options

One of the most interesting changes is the choice of display technology. Garmin offers the Fenix 9 Pro with a high-brightness AMOLED display, while the larger 47mm and 51mm versions can also be configured with a more efficient MiP display.

The difference becomes even more dramatic when power-saving mode is enabled. Garmin rates the 51mm solar model for as much as 291 days, while the AMOLED version reaches up to 42 days in the same mode. Actual battery life will naturally depend on how the watch is used. GPS activity tracking, display settings, sensors, notifications and connectivity features can all affect endurance. Solar performance will also depend on exposure to suitable light.

More storage and new software features

Garmin has doubled the internal storage compared with the previous Fenix 8 Pro, bringing the Fenix 9 Pro to 64GB. The extra space can be useful for maps, music and other smartwatch data.

The company has also introduced several software improvements. One of the new features is called Garmin Epic, which lets users bring multiple activities together into a single adventure. The feature can combine information from different activities with health, performance and photo data, creating a more complete record of a longer trip or adventure.

Garmin has also worked on the user interface, with smoother operation promised particularly when navigating topographic maps. For people who regularly use their smartwatch for outdoor navigation, faster map interaction could make a noticeable difference during hikes, runs and other activities.

The built-in LED flashlight has also received an upgrade. In addition to the usual white light, it can now produce red and green light, giving users additional lighting options depending on the situation.

Health and fitness tracking

The Fenix 9 Pro continues to use Garmin’s Elevate 5 sensor, which provides a range of health and fitness measurements. Supported features include heart-rate monitoring, blood oxygen saturation tracking and skin-temperature measurements. The watch can also perform an ECG.

The device retains Garmin’s extensive collection of sports and outdoor tools as well. GPS navigation, fitness tracking and numerous training features are included, while Garmin Pay provides contactless payment support through NFC.

With its combination of health sensors, navigation capabilities and long battery life, the Fenix 9 Pro is designed to serve both as an everyday smartwatch and as a tool for demanding outdoor activities.

LTE and satellite connectivity available

Another major option is Garmin’s inReach connectivity. Buyers can add an integrated LTE modem and satellite connectivity for an additional $100. This gives the Fenix 9 Pro access to communication features designed for users who spend time away from conventional cellular networks.

However, the connectivity hardware is not the only cost involved. Garmin requires a separate subscription to use the inReach features. This means buyers interested in satellite and cellular connectivity should consider the ongoing subscription cost in addition to the watch price.

The connectivity option could be particularly useful for hikers, climbers, trail runners and other outdoor enthusiasts who regularly travel through areas with limited mobile coverage.

The standard Fenix 9 starts at $999 for the 43mm version, while the 47mm model has the same starting price. The 51mm model costs $1,099. Unlike the Pro, the standard Fenix 9 does not offer solar charging or inReach connectivity.

Meanwhile, the standard Fenix 9 could be a more sensible choice for buyers who want most of Garmin’s flagship outdoor features without paying for the additional Pro upgrades.
