Ram Chandra Prasad Singh

Ram Chandra Prasad Singh is an Indian politician and the former President of the Janata Dal (United) political party. Before joining politics, he was working as an IAS officer. During the 2021 reshuffling of the Prime Minister’s cabinet, Pram Chandra Prasad was appointed as the Minister of Steel by Narendra Modi.

Ram Chandra Prasad Singh was born on Sunday, 6 July 1958 (age 63 years; as of 2021), in Mustaffapur, Nalanda, Bihar. His zodiac sign is Cancer. After completing his schooling, RCP Singh attended Patna University, Patna to earn a Bachelor in Arts with honors in History. He then went to Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi to attain a Masters in Arts in International Relations.

Career

Civil Service

After completing his formal education, RCP cleared the civil services exam and passed out in 1984. In 1984, he was enrolled in the Internal Revenue Service (income tax) department and he was first posted as the joint magistrate of Sultanpur district. After three years, he was appointed as the Chief Development Officer for Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat. After five years, he became the Collector and District Magistrate for Barabanki, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, and Rampur. For almost a year, RCP Singh was appointed as the personal secretary to the former Minister of Post & Telecom Beni Prasad Verma. He then served as the private secretary to Nitish Kumar who was serving in the Ministry of Railways, Agriculture, and Surface Transport for almost seven years. In 2004, Ram Chandra Prasad was appointed as the additional CEO of Greater Noida Authority operating under the supervision of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. In 2005, Nitish Kumar was appointed as the Chief Minister of Bihar, and Ram Chandra Prasad Singh worked as the primary secretary to the CM of Bihar. In 2010, Ram Chandra Prasad Singh took VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) from Indian Administrative Services.

Politics

After taking early retirement from service, Ram Chandra Prasad Singh began his political journey in 2010 by joining the Janata Dal (United). He was elected in the Rajya Sabha and served as the Member of Standing Committee on Railways and served as the Member of Consultative Committee of External Affairs and Home. He was appointed as the general secretary of the party, and later, he was appointed as the national president of Janata Dal (United) from 27 December 2020 to 31 July 2021. During the reshuffling of Narendra Modi’s cabinet ministers, RCP Singh was appointed as the Union Cabinet Minister of Steel on 7 July 2021.

Facts/Trivia

  • Several media reports have suggested Ram Chandra Prasad had been a close aide to the Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar. The reports also suggested that Ram Chandra took VRS on the advice of Nitish Kumar, and in 2010, he joined the Janata Dal (United).

  • Ram Chandra Prasad is known to be a calm and composed person, and other members of the party consider him as a ‘man of a few words.’ He was given the key role in the party, and he was appointed as the general secretary of the organization.
  • In December 2019, the majority of parliament members were against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Ram Chandra Prasad defended the act. During the parliament session, Prashant Kishor, the then national vice president of Janata Dal (United) was opposing the act.
  • Although he lobbied hard to get a place on the berth of the Union Cabinet from the BJP-JDU alliance, however, BJP won the Lok Sabha polls with the majority and insisted that the allies of the party should take up the ‘token representation.’ This decision of BJP forced Nitish Kumar to withdraw his support from the government.
  • After losing JDU as an ally, BJP lost Shiv Sena which made them realize that it would become impossible for BJP to win elections in Bihar and Maharashtra, where the politics is caste dominated. BJP reconsidered their decision and decided to give due honour to Ram Chandra Prasad Singh and offered him in the cabinet of Narendra Modi during the reshuffling.
  • Ram Chandra’s daughter, Lipi Singh, made it to the news when a police force operating under the orders of Lipi Singh opened fire on a group of people who were on their way to immerse the idol of Goddess Durga. This incident caused one death and several people got injured after which many people protested against Lipi Singh and asked for her removal. The Election Commission suspended Lipi Singh from the post of district SP.
